Donuts [recipe]

Donuts [recipe] - Bakeology.co.nz - A lifestyle blog that shares a love of baking and all things pretty

These donuts are amazingly easy to make and taste just as good as yeast based donuts that you end up having to knead and leave to rise for what seems like hours on end.  There is none of that with this recipe!

Make ’em – Rise ’em – Cook ’em – Shove ’em in your gob!

Ingredients

2 tablespoons white vinegar
¼c + 2 tablespoons  milk
2 tablespoons butter (softened)
½ cup white sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon salt
Oil for frying
½ cup icing sugar for dusting

Directions

  1. Stir the vinegar into the milk, and let stand for a few minutes until thick
  2. In a medium bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg and vanilla until well blended. Sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt; stir into the sugar mixture alternating with the vinegar and milk. Roll dough out on a floured surface to 1/3 inch thickness. Cut into donuts using a donut cutter or use a large round cutter and a smaller cutter for the middle. Let stand for about 10 minutes.
  3. Heat the oil in a frypan. Fry donuts in the hot oil until golden, turning over once. Drain on paper towels. Dust with icing sugar while they are still warm, and serve immediately.

You can also ice these as I have done here by making a simple glaze of 1 cup icing sugar, a few drops of food colouring or gel paste and enough water so that the glaze is fluid but not watery.

Another option is coating the donuts in cinnamon sugar.  Combine 1 cup brown sugar with 2 teaspoons of cinnamon.  Cover the donuts with the cinnamon sugar while they are still warm.

I ended up making three batches of this for a family event.  The donuts were iced and the donut holes were coated in cinnamon sugar.  Both equally delicious.

Enjoy!

  • Yum these sound amazing! I’ve always wanted to try making my own donuts but just scared of the frying business – I’m going to have to just do it though!
