Cheese Twists [recipe]

Cheese Twists [recipe] - Bakeology.co.nz - A lifestyle blog that shares a love of baking and all things pretty

At the October Brunch Club meet up, hosted by Tuihana Cafe, some of us were chatting while waiting for our food to arrive and there was a mention of  cheese and it turned into a cheese fest with a suggestion to have a cheese party (that might have possibly be me?!).  So a cheese party we had!  While it was a fairly low-key event, we had a great time chatting and filling our bellies with cheese laden goodness.

It didn’t take me long to decide on the first thing to make for the cheese party.  My mum has had this recipe for cheese twists in her recipe book for over 20 years and it is something we have always enjoyed.

I was lucky enough to receive some smoked paprika from the Mrs Rogers spice range, in the goodie bag I got at the Brunch Club, and was keen to try it out so I swapped out the ground paprika from the original recipe for smoked paprika.  A+++ would trade again!

Ingredients

  • 2 frozen ready rolled puff pastry sheets, thawed
  • 2 tablespoons tomato sauce
  • 2 teaspoons english mustard
  • ½ cup shredded cheese
  • smoked paprika
  • 1 egg, beaten

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 200ºC.
  2. Spread 1 pastry sheet with tomato sauce.  Spread the other with mustard.
  3. Sprinkle cheese and smoked paprika over tomato sauce.  Place remaining pastry sheet on top with the mustard side down.  Press firmly together.
  4. Brush pastry with egg.  Cut into 1 cm strips.  Twist strips.  Place on to a baking tray that has a sheet of baking paper on it.
  5. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until puffed and golden.
